چکیده

We show that realistic multipath infrared channels can be characterized well by only two parameters: optical path loss and rms delay spread. Functional models for the impulse response, based on infrared reflection properties, are proposed and analyzed. Using the ceiling-bounce functional model, we develop a computationally efficient method to predict the path loss and multipath power requirement of diffuse links based on the locations of the transmitter and receiver within a room. Use of our model is a simple, yet accurate, alternative to the use of an ensemble of measured channel responses in evaluating the impact of multipath distortion.

Angle diversity for nondirected wireless infrared communication

We outline the benefits and challenges of using angle diversity in nondirected wireless infrared (IR) communications systems. Multiple transmitter beams and multiple narrow field-of-view receivers reduce the path loss, multipath distortion, and background noise of the channel, which leads to improved range. We also discuss practical considerations for multielement angle-diversity systems, inclu...

Decision-feedback equalization of pulse-position modulation on measured nondirected indoor infrared channels

We examine the performance of two decisionfeedback equalizers (DFE’s) for pulse-position modulation (PPM) on measured nondirected indoor infrared channels with intersymbol interference. PPM offers high average-power efficiency, but on ISI channels, unequalized PPM suffers severe performance penalties. We have previously examined the performance of the maximum-likelihood sequence detector (MLSD)...

Design of a Low-Latency Router Based on Virtual Output Queuing and Bypass Channels for Wireless Network-on-Chip

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...

Iterative Site-Based Modeling for Wireless Infrared Channels

We describe an iterative site-based method for estimating the impulse response of wireless infrared channels. The method can efficiently account for multiple reflections of any order. A simple geometrical model of indoor environments is presented which includes interior features such as partitions, people, and furniture, thus permitting accurate evaluation of shadowing effects. For a reflection...

Link design for nondirected wireless infrared communications.

We optimize the design of a short-range communication system using nondirected line-of-sight IR radiation. We propose a receiver structure comprising a spherical thin-film optical filter and a truncated spherical lens that can significantly outperform an optimized planar-filter system. We can make the passband of the spherical filter arbitrarily narrow without constraining the field of view by ...
